Mocha Noir (Limited Release)
This is our first limited release dark roast and we're excited to get it into your hands!
First, the aroma. Mocha Noir is one of the best smelling coffees we've ever had. If you love the smell of coffee, the aroma of the roasted bean, then this coffee is for you. The ground beans alone smell of intense spice and is an experience unto itself. When you grind them, smell them! And then when you brew it, the brewed coffee is one of the more calming aromas we can imagine: one part fig and plum and one part warm baking spices. The aroma will have you thinking of baking an apple pie on a chilly fall day in New England.
Then, the taste. The coffee you'll brew from this bean is rich, warm, and has a wonderful, lingering and slightly sweet mouthfeel. During testing our group of tasters all agreed that one word describes this coffee best: comforting. It just begs to be drunk when you're nestled in a blanket in front of a fire.
This coffee will be great for the coming months of holidays and entertaining. And it's not a take-no-prisoners dark roast like Darker or Darkest, this dark roast will please coffee drinkers who aren't necessarily dark roast only people...if they merely enjoy fragrant coffee they'll love it. And honestly we would love to know what light roast drinkers think of Mocha Noir too because the aroma is that good: it can go head-to-head with any of the fragrant beans from Ethiopia and Yemen varietals.
To make this coffee we sourced high quality beans from Yemen called Mockha Matari, famed for having an incredible full body and strong spice notes. We roasted it a medium-dark so that we could retain the fantastic yet subtle fruity aromas of the bean. If you've never had a coffee from Yemen this is an excellent one to try. Yemen is the nation right across the Red Sea from Ethiopia so it's from one of the most concentrated coffee spots in the world and is actually where coffee originated. Yep, all coffee once came from Yemen and for about two hundred years nearly every cup of coffee on earth passed through one harbor on Yemen's Red Sea coast called al-Mokha. The name stuck to the drink and ever since the Yemeni port town ended up on the menu at every café in America.
This coffee astounded us with its range of flavors. What you get is unlike anything else we sell. Just like our Dark, it had incredible spice notes but they are the ones that Eastern Africa and Yemen are known for. It's wild and a little untamed compared to our core blends, but in the best way possible.
We urge you to use your best extraction brewing methods with this one to ensure you extract all this bean has to offer. We tested with a 4:6 pour over method and absolutely loved the results. We also loved the espresso we made with it. We're not exaggerating when we say this is one of the best dark roasts we've ever had. That's why we're offering it!
Here are actual quotes from early drinkers:
- “The one word I keep coming back to right now is comforting.”
- “The mouthfeel on this coffee is insane! The sweetness just lingers.”
- "This is a dark roast, but it has fruity characteristics which dark roasts usually don't have. Incredible."
